Spices and Stories in Little India

Visitors browse colorful hanging decorations and trinkets at a vibrant Little India market stall.

Little India rewards slow exploration. Wander through streets filled with the scent of fresh spices and jasmine garlands, where colourful shophouses, traditional sweet shops, flower stalls and sari boutiques reflect one of Singapore's most vibrant cultural neighbourhoods. Between heritage landmarks and family-run eateries, every corner offers a glimpse into the traditions, flavours and everyday rhythms that continue to shape the district today.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple
At the heart of the neighbourhood stands Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, one of Singapore's oldest Hindu temples. Dedicated to the goddess Kali, its richly decorated gopuram (entrance tower) is adorned with colourful sculptures of Hindu deities, while the temple itself remains an active place of worship. Visit respectfully to experience the sounds of prayer, the fragrance of incense and centuries-old traditions that continue to be part of everyday life in Little India.

Former House of Tan Teng Niah
A few streets away stands the Former House of Tan Teng Niah, the last surviving Chinese villa in Little India. Its colourful façade has become one of Singapore's most photographed heritage landmarks, reflecting the district's long history as a neighbourhood shaped by different communities living and working side by side.

Tekka Centre
From there, make your way to Tekka Centre, where the neighbourhood comes together over food. Browse the bustling wet market, watch local vendors at work and settle into the hawker centre for favourites such as biryani, prata and freshly brewed teh tarik. It's one of the best places to experience the everyday rhythm of Little India.

Mustafa Centre
End your visit at Mustafa Centre, a Singapore institution that's open around the clock. Wander through its seemingly endless aisles stocked with everything from spices and chocolates to electronics, jewellery and travel essentials. It's an experience that's uniquely Singapore and captures the energy and diversity that define Little India today.
