Paradox Resort Phuket warmly welcomes you to immerse yourself in this grand cultural event and explore the rich heritage of this island paradise.
What is the Vegetarian Festival?
The Vegetarian Festival is a significant event in Phuket’s cultural calendar, celebrated with colorful ceremonies and a strict vegetarian diet. During this time, the city is adorned with yellow flags, symbolizing the beginning of a sacred period of merit-making. From spiritual rituals to vibrant street processions, this festival offers an opportunity to witness the deep-rooted Chinese cultural influences that shape Phuket.
Vegetarian Festival Guidelines
To fully embrace the festival, participants adhere to specific practices, including:
- Abstaining from meat: A core element of the festival, ensuring all food consumed is purely plant-based.
- Avoiding strong-smelling vegetables: Ingredients like garlic, onions, and chives are avoided as they are believed to disrupt the body’s energy balance.
- Refraining from strongly flavored foods: Excessively sour, sweet, salty, or spicy dishes are avoided to maintain calmness and balance.
- Observing food preparation standards: Ensuring food is prepared by those observing the festival’s precepts and using clean, separate utensils.
- Abstaining from alcohol: No alcohol is consumed during the 9-day observance.
- Keeping the 9 lanterns lit: As a symbolic practice, shrines keep lanterns burning throughout the festival.
Why is the Vegetarian Festival so Popular?
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival has been celebrated for generations and is regarded as a time to purify the body and mind. The festival promotes health, spiritual well-being, and balance of the body’s yin and yang through a vegetarian diet. For many, this is also a time of merit-making, reflecting Phuket’s strong Chinese heritage and cultural traditions.
Exploring Phuket During the Vegetarian Festival
If you're visiting Phuket in early October, you’ll find the streets adorned with yellow flags and the air filled with anticipation for this grand celebration. Be sure to visit key shrines and witness the ceremonial processions that capture the essence of Phuket’s Chinese culture.
Iew Keng Ceremony (The Street Procession): The Iew Keng Ceremony features a grand procession that winds through the city, led by a vibrant banner and ornate palanquins, bringing blessings to the people. Conducted on different days by various shrines throughout the festival, this procession is the most spectacular highlight of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, symbolizing the essence of the event. Local households along the route set up altars adorned with Chinese embroidered table aprons (TokUi 桌圍), placing lit candles, incense sticks, flowers, fruit, sweets, and tea to welcome the blessings of the gods as they are channeled through spirit mediums.
Koi Han Ceremony (The Ceremonial Bridge – Crossing Ritual): The Koi Han Ceremony involves a symbolic crossing of a bridge, representing a ritual to ward off bad luck and cleanse participants of impurities. As devotees cross the bridge, they believe they are purifying themselves from misfortunes. Upon completing the crossing, a red stamp of the Nine Emperor Gods’ seal is applied to the back of each participant, signifying their purification from sins and protection against calamities.
Koi Hoi Ceremony (Fire-Walking Ritual): The Koi Hoi Ceremony is renowned for its fire-walking ritual, demonstrating the participants' strict adherence to the festival’s precepts. Locals believe that “fire overcomes impurity and repels evil influence.” Through this rite, individuals purify themselves with fire, expiating their transgressions and overcoming negative energies. It is widely held that only those who have been cleansed will emerge from the fire unscathed.
The Farewell Ritual: Sending Off the Nine Emperor Gods: The culmination of the Vegetarian Festival occurs on the evening of the ninth and final day with the farewell ritual for the Jade Emperor and the Nine Emperor Gods. Known as “KiuOng,” this heartfelt ceremony involves sending the Nine Emperor Gods back to heaven at midnight. Every street in Phuket City will be filled with people gathering to partake in this moving event, especially around Thalang Road, Phuket Road, Surin Circle Clock Tower, and the road leading to Saphan Hin. This ceremony is a must-see, as it beautifully encapsulates the festival's spirit of gratitude and reverence.
